A school threatened with legal action for unfair dismissal has confirmed it did sack its headteacher - but claimed the move was necessary.
Sandra Hillier has alleged that St John's School in Stock Road, Billericay, dismissed her for no reason. She has been at the school for 30 years but parents were told in a letter that she would not be returning.
The school says it would fight any unfair dismissal charge - but will not say why she was sacked.
Principal Joanne Osen said: "Mrs Hillier's contract with the school has been terminated. The reasons were fully explained to her.
"I would like to take this opportunity to advise our parents that there is nothing to worry about. If any do have any concerns they are welcome to come into school to speak to me."
However, Mrs Hillier, a Tory councillor for Langdon Hills on Basildon Council, said: "There does not seem to be a definitive reason for my dismissal. I went to see Mrs Osen about something different and she said it would be best for me and the school if we were to terminate my contract.
"Mrs Osen has said nothing to indicate the reason.
"I am extremely upset as the school was my life."
