Sharpshooters using air rifles have been taking pot shots in a children's play area
Police went to the play park at Waldegrave Way, Lawford, last night after concerns were raised by a member of the public who could hear air rifles being fired.
Police went to the park at 8.20pm to try to catch the shooters but were unable to find them.
Insp Paul Morton of Clacton police said they were looking for a group of youths aged about 15.
He said no-one was injured by the air rifles but added today: "I want to warn people about the dangers of air rifles.
"If we discover who is using them we will take it seriously."
Crime reduction officer for Tendring, Calvin Heal, added: "Air rifles are extremely dangerous."
He said if there were airguns being used in a play area it was even more dangerous because there could be children there.
"If you think air guns are being used inappropriately in open areas, contact the police," he said.
Two weeks ago, gun-toting youngsters were shooting the weapons at the newly-opened skateboard park in Walton.
A nationwide weapons amnesty has been held throughout the month and finishes tonight. Air rifles have been among those weapons handed in to Essex Police.
Brian Rolfe, chairman of Lawford Parish Council, said it was a new problem in the area and said the parish council hopes strong action would be taken by police.
