Southend's mayor will be fighting the flab when his period in office ends after learning all about his body at a men's awareness day.

Mayor Alan Crystall joined forces with a couple of footballers from Southend United to be weighed, measured and generally tested and checked as part of a campaign to get men to pay more attention to their health.

Staff from Southend's Primary Care Trust, including Nellie the Naughty Nurse, were on hand in the Civic Centre to test blood pressure and offer advice on everything from smoking to sex education to cancer.

Mr Crystall said: "After the mayoral year has ended on May 8, I think I will be going on a strict diet."
