Phil Parkinson says he's confident Colchester United players stalling on contract offers will pen new deals.

The U's chief is waiting for almost half his squad to accept offers.

While Alan White is set to sign a new contract in the next few days, other players have hinted they are not entirely happy with the deals they've been offered.

But Parkinson said: "I am hoping to seal most of the deals within the next week.

"We have a tremendous spirit at the club and it is my job to retain that."

Parkinson is, however, making contingency plans should problems occur.

He watched seven trialists play in Colchester reserves' 2-1 win over Cambridge United in the Avon Insurance Combination yesterday.

Former Leyton Orient striker Aaron McLean, 19, now with Ryman League premier division champions Aldershot, bagged a last-minute winner to round off a promising performance, while Blackburn Rovers trainee Ryan Robinson, 20, impressed in goal.

Tottenham's Irish youth international George Snee, 20, Watford midfielder Neil Saunders, 19, and Swindon left-back Kevin Halliday, 19, were also on show.

Richard Acheampong, a full-back from Dutch side Feyernood, only lasted 20 minutes before coming off injured. Frenchman Blaise M'Biami was withdrawn just after the hour mark.

Youth striker Liam Coleman gave Colchester a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot.

Parkinson said: "I want the players to sign, but we have to look after the club and, if they don't sign, we have got to get people in who are going to do a job for Colchester United."
