An estate agent who will need intensive care for the rest of his life after suffering appalling injuries in a motorway smash has been awarded £4.3million damages.
Anthony Gardner, 52, of Southend, smiled as judge Mr Justice Davis approved the compensation deal which will guarantee his right to live as independently as possible in his own home.
The divorced father-of-three, who is in a wheelchair, was driving on the M11 near Stansted on September 1, 1998 when his Volkswagen slammed into a lorry towing fair equipment which had overturned and blocked almost the entire southbound carriageway, the High Court in London heard.
Mr Gardner, then living in Chichester Road, underwent many months of agonising rehabilitation in hospital and only recently has been able to move into a bungalow of his own in Southend with 24-hour support from carers.
The lorry driver's motor insurers did not dispute liability in the case.
