A low-key protest by Greenpeace was staged outside an Esso petrol station.
Members of Greenpeace stood outside the garage, in Princes Road, Chelmsford, for 24 hours to try to encourage motorists to boycott the company.
But although the numbers were low, campaigners said the protest was "very worthwhile".
The international StopEsso campaign was launched by Greenpeace and other groups in response to the US government's backdown from the international climate treaty, the Kyoto Protocol.
Greenpeace campaigner Vivian Collins, of Lethe Grove, Colchester, said the protest was all about getting Esso to "pull its socks up and get on board".
She said: "Basically, it is the idea that Esso makes so much money but refutes the idea there's such a thing as global warming."
But a spokesman for Esso said: "Esso does take global warming very seriously."
