Braintree police have again urged people to beware of bogus callers after an elderly man was targeted at the weekend.
A homeowner in Peel Crescent, Braintree, was approached by a man and a woman on Saturday.
The duo claimed to be from the area and said they were looking for a former neighbour.
After tricking their way inside the house they joined the man in the living room. One of the pair then asked for a glass of water.
When he returned with the drink both the man and woman had fled. A subsequent search by the owner revealed that a pension book and cash was missing from the room.
A spokesman for Braintree police said: "Our advice is don't let people in that you don't know, ask for identification and if you are in any doubt close the door and call the police."
A similar incident occurred three weeks ago in Coggeshall when an elderly woman was the victim.
If you, a neighbour or relative are in any doubt about potential bogus callers, call either Braintree police on 01376 551312 and ask for the crime prevention officer or contact the internal audit section of Braintree Council on 01376 552525
