Hundreds of Scouts paraded through Colchester town centre to celebrate England's patron saint who is also the patron saint of Scouting worldwide.

Beaver, Cub and Scout groups from all the Colchester districts took part in the St George's Day parade, marching from St Botolph's car park to the High Street.

Mayor Nigel Chapman (Con, Fordham and Stour) took the salute outside the town hall and Colchester MP Bob Russell also attended. The parade took 15 minutes with police closing roads in the interests of safety.

Scouts from along the Colne Valley commemorated with a traditional parade and service.

About 200 young Scouts and their adult leaders gathered at the Colne Valley Golf Club in Station Road, Earls Colne, yesterday afternoon, for a St George's Day parade through the village to St Andrew's Parish Church.

A number of Scout leaders received awards for their service, and guests included Halstead mayor Malcolm Fincken.

At the church a service was held and a collection made for Eleanor Smith, a three-year-old Gosfield girl currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

Also standing for election in the Fordham and Stour ward on May 1 are Wilma Sutton (Lib Dem) and Gary Griffiths (Lab)
