Highways bosses have vowed to look at ways of killing traffic speeds in a Colchester village after residents voiced growing fears.
Villagers say speeding vehicles are an increasing problem in Birch.
Cliff Wookey-Cracknell, resident, said: "Speeding in Mill Lane and Birch Street is now a serious problem and creating a serious danger to children."
The parish council reckons about 1,600 vehicles a day use Birch Street, with pedestrians forced to dodge oncoming traffic where the road narrows.
Chairman Geoff King said: "Many of the people who drive too fast are local but there is also a lot of through-traffic. If a kid runs out, drivers have no way of stopping in time."
Colchester Council promised to look at traffic-calming solutions but ruled out speed humps as an answer.
