Colchester has more quality attractions than most major cities in the UK according to a tourism body.
The town and its surrounding areas have more than 20 sites of interests given the quality badge by Visit Britain, a new body created out of the former English Tourism Council.
It is more than nearly every other town and city in the UK.
The town's "quality assured" attractions include the Zoo, the Castle and the East Anglian Railway Museum.
Karen Elmer, Colchester Council's tourism officer, said Colchester had gone out to get its attractions awarded the "quality assured" stamp and that other places were now following suit.
She said: "We are one of the leading destinations in terms of the "quality assured" awards. There is an awful lot to do in here. Other destinations, including Liverpool, Gateshead and Sunderland, are now looking at what we have done and doing it themselves."
In the eastern region, the East of England Tourism Board is using Colchester as the example to follow.
The town's major attractions are put in for the "quality assured" award each year.
