Doucecroft School in Kelvedon, which teaches autistic pupils, is looking for a new site.
The school is now in its 26th year and has 36 pupils.
Clive Stobbs, who took up his post as Essex Autistic Society chief executive in February, said: "We need a bigger site, about three to four acres, within 20 miles of Kelvedon.
"To give you an example of how under pressure we are, there were 151 applications for 36 places in the last 18 months."
Mr Stobbs said a project manager had been appointed and local authorities had been contacted to help in the search for a site.
Stressing how important staff were he added: "We have outgrown our present site and cannot extend any more. Possibly an old school building would be suitable."
He added: "There is no room to expand. Seventy five per cent of our pupils come from Essex. We would like to see a new school with up to 50 pupils."
