The millennium is just a hazy memory to most people but the celebrations are still going on in one Colchester village.
Aldham is getting ready to officially unveil its millennium playing field 1,240 days after moving into the 21st century.
The village started the hunt for a spare piece of land six years ago.
The lease for the old playing field site was about to run out but parish councillors vowed to find a new area for children to play.
"We had a six-acre playing field for a peppercorn rent of one shilling a year," said council clerk Anne Fulcher.
"It was very difficult to find a new piece of land. Luckily, the landowner extended the lease for three more years while we tried to find an alternative site."
It eventually came up with a new location near Brook Road.
The council has already planted almost 60 trees at the site and put in picnic tables.
It also boasts five-a-side football and basketball facilities. Other play equipment should arrive in the next fortnight.
The council says the £28,000 project will provide something for all the family.
The millennium playing field officially opens on Saturday, May 24, at 3pm. There will be a balloon race, games and refreshments
