More than 16,000 Southend people act as unpaid carers for relatives or friends, it was revealed today.
The figure, nearly ten per cent of the borough's population, was discovered through census research.
Now Southend Carers' Forum wants to ensure all carers know what help is available to them.
In particular, it hopes to help the 3,000 people who care for more than 50 hours each week.
Spokeswoman Julie Dennis said: "Even at a conservative estimate of £10 an hour, Southend carers are delivering care worth over £175million over a 12-month period."
Carers registered with the forum, based at the Southend Association of Voluntary Services centre in Alexandra Street, receive newsletters and information about support and respite services. For information, call 01702 393933.
