Allotment holders anxious about losing plots in one of the best-kept sites in Thurrock were sent a message of reassurance this week.

Gardening enthusiasts with plots at Hogg Lane, Grays, were frightened about losing their tenure after finding the site was listed in Thurrock's newly published development plan as land for housing development.

Geoff Simpson, president of Hogg Lane Allotment Preservation Association, was convinced this would mean holders losing their allotments by the year 2006.

He said that the site was one of the best laid-out and maintained in the borough.

Councillor Mike Canavon (Lab, Ockendon), who is helping the council's cabinet with a review of allotment provision, is assuring the allotments, however.

He said: "This is a draft plan subject to consultation. People can object to it and it can be amended. The allotment holders know this and will be putting in objections.

"Even if the designation remains, it does not mean the land will be developed for housing. The site is owned by the council and is keen to retain it for allotments."
