Vets today warned pet owners to be alert to the dangers of buying and caring for rabbits at this time of year.
As the weather gets warmer the fatal disease myxomatosis spreads faster.
Pet owners are advised to have their rabbits vaccinated by vets every six months to avoid them contracting the disease.
Emma Cooper, a veterinary nurse at Howell Vets in Long Road, Canvey, said: "We let people know how bad the disease can get and advise that they clean out their rabbit's cage regularly.
"They should also look out for any signs of disease in the cage itself."
The surgery has had to put down as many as five rabbits a day in recent weeks.
Tell-tale signs to look out for are flu-like symptoms, a discharge from the eyes and nose and swelling around the ears.
If you think your rabbits maybe suffering then contact a vet as soon as possible.
