Green fingered enthusiasts who think their gardens are blooming marvellous are being urged to sign up to this year's Billericay in Bloom competition.
More than 60 keen gardeners entered last year and organisers of the event, Billericay Town Council, are hoping to attract more people for the 2003 competition.
Best kept front garden, best kept back garden, best sheltered accommodation, best school garden, best commercial premises and best public house are among the categories on offer.
The Brentwood Gazette sponsors the best sheltered accommodation garden while other categories are backed by Billericay Town Council, Billericay Mayflower Twinning Association, Waitrose supermarket and Oaktree IT Services.
This year primary school children will be asked to grow a garden in a pot with plants beginning with the same letter. These have to be grown at home without the aid of parents and then brought into school for judging day in July.
Town clerk, Gwynneth Moylan, is expecting a lot of entries in this new category.
She said: 'The flower pots are always popular with children and the new letter theme should prove a hit.'
Billericay Town representative, Cllr Marion Wilson, added: 'Gardeners shouldn't be modest - their garden could be just as good as everyone else's. It costs nothing to enter and people could be surprised and win a prize.'
The closing date for entries is Saturday, June 28, and prize giving day will be on Thursday, July 17, at the Day Centre in Chantry Way.
