Police have issued a warning after an elderly disabled man was burgled by a man pretending to be a council official.

The bogus caller visited the man at his flat in Alton Park Road, Clacton, and said he was from the council and had come to inspect cracks.

He then said he was leaving to collect some paperwork but failed to return.

Later, the resident found his wallet containing £115 was missing.

The incident happened on Saturday.

Police are worried the trickster may try to talk his way into other people's homes.

A spokesman warned it was highly unlikely for council officials to be operating over a bank holiday and said residents should not let callers into their homes without first checking an identity card and telephoning their employer.

If they were still concerned, they should contact the police.

The man was described as aged between 50 and 55, of medium heavy build and about 5ft 7in tall. He had short dark hair with a ruddy or swarthy complexion.

He was described as wearing a multi-coloured jumper, dark trousers and a brown jacket.

Anyone who may be able to help with the incident or has been approached is asked to contact Clacton police on 01255 221312.
