A South Woodham resident has told of her disappointment after Royal Mail delivered her birthday cards two days late.

Sue MacEwen, of Broughton Road, had her birthday on Saturday, but the day's celebrations were dampened when she received no mail.

"On Monday, I received 17 letters, among them eight birthday cards," she said.

"The cards were all first class are were all postmarked April 11, so they should have been delivered on Saturday."

Royal Mail blamed staff illness, but Mrs McEwen said that the consequences of missed deliveries could be much worse for others.

"Imagine if you were waiting for tickets because you were going away or if you were expecting mail containing some test results," she said.

Royal Mail apologised for erratic deliveries and promised that the situation would improve.

A spokesman said: "There were short-term staff shortages and we apologise to customers if there were some delays. We now have our full complement of staff and deliveries should be happening every day."
