A young boy was fighting for his life today after he was seriously injured in a road accident.

The six-year-old is in intensive care with serious head injuries after he was involved in a collision with a car near his Colchester home.

The boy, who has not been named, was on a bike near his home in Eldred Avenue at about 3.20pm on Friday when he was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 206 convertable.

He was taken to Colchester General Hospital but later transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where his condition was described as critical.

A 17-year-old Colchester woman driving the Peugeot was arrested by police on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an injury accident. She has been released on bail until June 16.

A 28-year-old driver of a Ford Escort car has also been bailed by police until May 16 on suspicion of failing to stop.

Police are keen to trace the driver of a red Ford Fiesta XR2 car, which was seen in the area at the time, to come forward and help with the investigation.

"Inquiries are continuing and it is important that anybody with information makes contact with us," said Sgt Chris Tyler, of the police traffic unit at Stanway.

"We are grateful to local residents for the help they have given."

Anyone with information should contact Stanway Traffic Police on 01206 762512.
