SOUTHEND United today appointed Steve Wignall as their new manager.
Wignall, 48, takes over the Blues ahead of their Division Three encounter with Torquay United at Roots Hall tomorrow and replaces Rob Newman as boss.
The former manager of the Seasiders' Essex rivals Colchester United is delighted to have landed the job.
"I'm absolutely buzzing at the moment," said Wignall. "I came close to getting the job before and am delighted to get the chance.
"I've spoken to the board and we think along the same lines. This club has massive potential and I feel we can go a long way."
Wignall added that he planned a shake-up at Roots Hall, saying he was amazed that the Shrimpers had lost 23 games this season.
The announcement was due to be made last night but the Shrimpers board delayed their decision until this morning.
"We are very happy with the appointment," Blues deputy chairman Geoffrey King told the club's official website.
"We feel we have made the right choice and look forward to seeing him at tomorrow's game."
Second interviews were held yesterday with Wignall, Steve Thompson, Stewart Robson and Don Mackay all in the frame.
But Southend co-owner Ron Martin admitted late last night that Thompson and Robson had both been ruled out.
Robson, who was appointed caretaker manager following Newman's sacking, will return to his role as chief coach.
Wignall has numerous promotions on his CV with non-league Aldershot Town and Colchester United, who he took into Division Two.
He also led the U's to the Auto Windscreen Shield final at Wembley.
Wignall came low down in an Echo poll among Southend fans to discover who they felt should take over at Roots Hall.
He attracted 13 votes, well behind favourite Graham Rix (41), Robson (38), John Beck (25), Thompson and Roy McFarland (both 20).
