Plans are afoot to build a new Women's Institute hall in South Woodham Ferrers.
Members currently meet in a wooden-framed building in Hullbridge Road, but it has become run down.
If planning permission is granted by Chelmsford Borough Council, the hall could be demolished and replaced.
Stuart Cudmore, of agent Munday and Cramer, said he believed that the two houses which the group is also seeking permission to build on the site would help fund the new building.
"It can be uneconomical paying out maintenance for an old building," he said.
"The new one would be a low maintenance building, probably of a similar size to the current one in floor space, but a totally different shape"
