Motorists faced five-mile tailbacks on the A12 after a lorry jackknifed.
Two articulated lorries were involved in a collision on the two-lane southbound section of the road near Marks Tey at about 11.45am yesterday.
It caused one lorry, driven by a 47-year-old French driver, who was on his way to the Perry Road industrial estate, Witham, to collect his load, to jacknife.
The other vehicle was driven by Geoffrey Calver, 54, of Diss, Norfolk.
Mr Calver's gas chemical tanker, owned by H and P Freightway of Felixstowe, was empty at the time.
After two hours, the French lorry was towed to Clacton by a heavy-duty recovery team.
A police spokesman said no-one was injured in the incident
A police spokesman said: "The tailbacks were worse because of people getting away for the Easter break. Thankfully no-one was injured."
