Pat Baldwin scored a rare goal as Colchester United Reserves maintained their top three position in the Avon Insurance League.
The 20-year-old scored the only goal of the game, a volley from a knock-down, as the U's saw off Northampton Town second-string 1-0 at Layer Road yesterday afternoon.
It was only Baldwin's second goal in U's colours.
The win took the U's up to joint second spot on 41 points alongside Norwich City and seven adrift of current leaders Crystal Palace with just Wycombe Wanderers and Cambridge United to play.
The U's included two triallists, right-back Jack Smillie and Harlow striker Matt Harrold, making his second appearance
