Beware bogus charity-type appeals to donate clothing for Eastern Europe, families were warned today.
Leaflets have just been delivered to Benfleet homes urging people to search out unwanted garments for needy people abroad, but sharp-eyed residents and the Charity Commission advised them not to be conned.
Peter Smith, of Oakwood Close, Benfleet, received a leaflet from a company called Olonex, asking for "unwanted clothing for export to Eastern Europe".
He said: "I had one of these about 12 months ago, but I just wonder whether it's genuine. There is a registered number listed, but it doesn't say that it's a charity number."
A Charity Commission spokeswoman said it had last year opened an inquiry into door-to-door clothing collections in the name of charity which is still ongoing.
She confirmed that Olonex was not a registered charity and added: "The Association of Charity Shops estimated they could be losing £1million a year to these non-charity businesses.
"It is important that people know who they are giving to."
Those with doubts can call the Charity Commission's helpline on 0870 333 0123, or Essex Trading Standards on 01245 341800 and/or the police.
