Parents look set to have to pay for the first time for a scheme to keep children off the streets of Tendring during the summer holidays.

Coastal Fun, which has been running free of charge for a number of years, has been under review for several months.

The scheme, which is run by Tendring Council across the district, provides activities for youngsters at a number of sites.

The Evening Gazette reported moves to bring in charges earlier this year but it was then revealed the situation was being looked at again.

Now two decisions have been issued on behalf of Robert Taylor, portfolio holder for leisure and community, which will take effect on April 23.

It is proposed that a non-refundable booking fee of £1.50 per child per session, including concessions, should be brought in.

It has also been decided to deliver the scheme to 12 venues across Tendring.

Tendring councillors have emphasised that the reason for bringing in the charges was not to raise money but to try to ensure that youngsters who booked on the programme of events actually turned up.

Last year, the turnout of those who booked was only 44 per cent, although staff and facilities were laid on to cover for the full number booked.
