A councillor has called on newly-appointed traffic wardens to take action against motorists who park illegally.

Philip Turner (Con, Billericay West), warned motorists parking in High Street, Billericay, that wardens would target offenders.

"Billericay High Street is the scene of regular disturbances caused by anti-social motorists who have little regard for other users of our highways," he said.

"Many are repeat offenders creating potentially hazardous bottlenecks. They are putting the well-being of other motorists and pedestrians at risk despite the fact that, generally, car parks are within easy access."

Mr Turner said there was free time-restricted parking in the High Street during the day, together with spaces for Waitrose and Somerfield shoppers.

He added: "Problems are generally caused by a small but persistent group of illegally parked motorists. I hope the prospect of a fixed penalty is sufficient to re-educate them."

A Basildon Council spokesman said the new wardens were committed to wiping out illegal parking, and punishing offenders, all over the district.
