Steve Thompson and Steve Wignall are the two main names in the frame to take over as Southend United's next manager, club owner Ron Martin revealed today.

Former Seasiders boss Thompson and ex-Colchester chief Wignall are due at Roots Hall for second interviews tomorrow.

And Martin, who is expected to name his choice on Friday, also confirmed that Blues' caretaker chief Stewart Robson was still in the running.

"Steve Thompson and Steve Wignall are the two names on our managerial short-list," said Martin.

"They are the two candidates who we believe have the necessary qualities to take this club forward on the strength of their initial interviews.

"But Stewart Robson is also still being considered. He joined us in January to help our former manager Rob Newman on the coaching side of things with his vast experience. There was never any intention of making him manager here at the end of the season.

"But now I have an open mind as to whether he will be taking up that role now or continuing as head coach at the club. Either way he will be involved in our new set-up."

Martin also said other candidates for the vacant Roots Hall hot-seat may still be considered at this late stage.

"I have been out of the country for a couple of weeks and other interviews have taken place during my absence," he explained.

"I will be speaking to my fellow directors today to see if there are any other candidates they felt were strong enough to come in for a second interview."
