Chelmsford borough councillors last week agreed an increase in their allowances starting on May 21.
The rise will take a member's basic allowance from £4000 to £4,200 a year, while special responsibility allowances will go up by five per cent.
Examples include allowance of the Leader of the Council which increases from £12,000 to £12,600, an executive member from £6,000 to £6,300, the planning committee chairman from £4,000 to £4,200, and the leader of the major opposition group from £4,000 to £4,200.
There is an election for Chelmsford Borough Council on May 1.
