Stuart Campbell, found guilty of murdering his niece Danielle Jones, has lodged an appeal against his conviction.
The 44--year-old self employed builder from Grays was jailed for life in December for abducting and murdering the 15-year-old St Clere's schoolgirl.
Danielle had gone missing in June 2001 on her way to school. There were a handful of sightings on June 18, after she left her home in Hayle, East Tilbury.
Despite a nationwide search, involving hundreds of officers and volunteers, her body was never found.
The appeal was initially made, in the form of specific papers being placed, at Chelmsford Crown Court, the location of Campbell's ten week trial.
