Police have been offering advice and tips to make women health workers feel safe.
A personal safety awareness training day took place at the Wickford Clinic, in Market Road.
The audience of 12 were given advice and tips on how to keep safe while doing their work in the community.
PC Geoff Whiter, community liaison officer of Wickford police, who helped to arrange the event, said: "It went very well.
"It was not a case of showing them practical moves of self defence but more about empowering them."
"All the staff who took part have been given a personal attack alarm, which they can sound if they feel in danger.
"It is specifically for health practitioners who might go out into the community alone such as district nurses."
The event was the first of its kind but there may be more in the future.
