A storming second-half comeback was too little, too late for Basildon as they went down 13-10 at Bury St Edmunds -- a result which means they are condemned to a rock-bottom finish.
On the back of two wins that had given them half a chance, the newtowners missed a couple of early penalties which ultimately proved costly, and trailed 13-0 at half time.
Skipper Gary Smith led the revival with some big tackles and Australian Steve Haney, in his last game for the club as he is heading back to his homeland, got Basildon on the board with a penalty.
Fisher's try, which Haney converted, got Basilson within touching distance of Bury but they narrowly failed to cross the line for a decisive score.
