Work on demolishing a fomer nursing home on Clacton seafront will start in the next couple of weeks.
Retirement homes specialists McCarthy and Stone bought Beaumont Hall on Marine Parade East from Essex County Council.
The building has stood empty while plans for its development into 82 apartments were thrashed out with Tendring Council.
The scheme was finally given the all-clear by councillors last November - despite some objections from people living in the area.
It had been hoped the building would be put to some community use.
Ken Wood, contracts manager for the project, has now written to nearby residents warning the scheme is about to get under way.
"We intend to commence demolition operations at the site in the next few weeks," he said.
Mr Wood said construction work on the apartments would begin in August and it is hoped that it would be completed in about 13 months.
