New illegal schemes involving health and security surveys are being used in Colchester.
In recent days, the community safety unit at Colchester Council have had reports from worried residents who have been contacted by people claiming either to be from, or backed by, the council
The first involved a woman who was contacted by a firm, claiming they were working with Colchester Council to carry out security surveys of their homes.
Once in the home, the firm attempted to sell various security devices the resident may well not need.
Community safety officer Peter Carrington said: "They are absolutely not backed by the council.
"We would never endorse any company on this earth and we are extremely concerned that any firm is suggesting their services are supported by either the council or the police."
Essex Trading Standards has been made aware of firms using this tactic.
Mr Carrington said in a separate incident an elderly lady was told she needed a health survey to claim council tax benefit and that someone was on their way to visit her at her home.
Mr Carrington said: "The council would never undertake such questionnaires or surveys for claimants getting council tax benefit."
He called for anyone who is uncertain about a firm or possible bogus caller to contact him on 01206 282884.
