Environment Agency officers are trying to trace two men who collected domestic waste from a Silver End family and dumped it illegally in the countryside.
The two men called at the Silver End house and offered to take away and dispose of any waste.
The family paid them £50 to remove a large amount of domestic rubbish without taking details or getting a receipt.
Now the Agency is warning householders not to trust cold callers.
John Parish said:"People must ensure their waste is disposed of appropriately. The Silver End family may now face a bill for the clearance of the waste."
The pair who collected the waste from Silver End were a man of around 40 to 50 and a boy of about 15. They were in a vehicle slightly bigger than a Gransit, with a tipper body, possibly a 7.5 ton Rigid Tipper.
They dumped it on Birch Airfield, near Colchester. Agency officers traced the family to Silver End by examining documents thrown away in the refuse.
