The River Blackwater will be beset with an Oriental flavour this coming July in order to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust leukaemia charity.
The inaugural Essex Dragon Boat Regatta will be held at Black Water Navigation, Paper Mill Lock, Little Baddow on Sunday July 6.
Dragon boat racing is believed to have originated in China over 4,000 years ago, and previous races in the 30 foot vessels have been very successful for Anthony Nolan throughout the UK. The boats hold 11 people, and competitors race to the beat of a drummer.
Bronwen Nicholls, Anthony Nolan's area manager for the Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire area, said: "Should you decide to enter a team you will experience the thrill and immense fun of Dragon Boat Racing and at the same time, help us in our fight against leukaemia and other bone marrow related illnesses.
"It will be a fabulous fun day on the water - but be careful - this sport is addictive!" she added.
The trust is urging wannabe racers to book before June, as places are limited. Teams must consist of 11 to 15 people, aged 16 upwards, and will race against other teams in heats and, for the more successful outfits, a grand final. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third places as well as the overall winners, plus the highest sponsorship raisers. The final and prize giving ceremony is scheduled for around 5.30pm.
Entries cost £200 per team, and each team must raise a minimum of £330 in sponsorship.
