Sporting star Dean Macey was today left with nowhere to train after the sudden closure of a Canvey running track.

Other budding athletes are also struggling to keep up their training routines as the track at Waterside sports centre, in Somnes Avenue, Canvey, has been shut.

Since Friday, those wanting to use the facilities have been met with a padlocked gate with the sign Closed Until Further Notice slapped on it.

The council has revealed potential health hazards, like broken rails and track wear and tear, have led to the closure.

It has been hinted the facilities may never be used again.

Dave Blackwell, lead council member for sport, leisure and conservation, said: "The track has been closed following a risk assessment which highlighted various areas as unsafe.

"We have no idea when, or indeed if, the facility will be opened again.

"Over the last six weeks, only 96 people have used the facility - although as a council we support minority sports we have to question whether it would be worth pumping thousands and thousands of pounds into something that may not be used."

The news will come as a blow to Canvey sports star Dean Macey, who still lives on the island and has achieved silver and bronze medals at the World Athletics Championship.

Dean was unavailable to comment, but his dad Alan said: "Dean normally uses the track every evening."
