Muslim women and battered wives are joining forces to give their children an enjoyable day out.
Basildon Muslim Women's Group was given £6,000 in grants last year and some of that is being spent this year on a series of excursions.
The Muslim women are taking their own children and mother's and children from other groups in need. These include the Basildon Women's Refuge, people with learning difficulties and single parents.
Safina Sarwar of the group said: "There are a lot of people out there who do not get a chance to go out. This allows people to have a good day while also bringing groups together."
The trips, include a visit to the Science Museum, the London Aquarium, an arts and crafts museum and a farm.
Several women, both Muslim and non-Muslim, are also using funding from the group to take basic skills courses.
Keep fit classes, health lessons and swimming sessions are in the pipeline.
Sister Sarwar explained: "We could have rushed to spend the money but this way people benefit throughout the year.
"We can make the opportunities and it is up to the women to take them up."
