Both Clacton's lifeboats were called into action after three water bikers were reported overdue.
Coastguards at Walton launched the Atlantic 75 following the initial call at about 2.20pm yesterday.
However, one of the men had made his own way ashore and reported that two others were still out at sea with engine problems.
The Clacton inshore boat was then sent to join in the search.
A number of yachts also called coastguards with sightings of the craft which were in the mouth of the River Colne.
The two men were taken ashore at Brightlingsea suffering from the cold winds and they were met by the Clacton coastguards teams.
