Southend Airport could provide as many as 7,000 jobs if it was allowed to fully expand, says a recently published review.
The suggestion of the major employment boost comes in the annual review of the Thames Gateway South Essex regeneration project.
The review said the airport was a key economic driver for the whole of the area, and its future role as a regional airport with potential for growth was supported by the Gateway.
The report reveals: "Subject to the outcome of consultation and planning processes capacity could increase to some three million people a year - approximately the same as London City Airport.
"This expansion could provide 7,000 jobs - many of which would be for local people - and a direct air link to Europe for passengers and freight."
Last week Southend Council rejected plans by the airport to move historic grade one listed St Laurence Church, in Eastwoodbury Lane, to allow adequate runway safety clearance to meet new Civil Aviation Authority requirements.
Airport bosses are considering whether to submit a revised scheme to the council or appeal against the decision.
This would entail a public inquiry and it is likely to be some months before a final decision is made.
