Braintree town centre will sparkle this Christmas after a £3,000 bid to boost the festive lights was successful.
Members of the district council's area committee agreed to accept a request for money from the community fund for this financial year.
Ken Game, chairman of the town centre strategy group which made the bid, was delighted with the news.
He believes improved Christmas lights will encourage greater awareness of facilities in the town and stop the drift of shoppers to Chelmsford or Colchester.
He said: "I was a bit doubtful whether we would get it, but I am very pleased with the decision."
Only one councillor, Nigel Edey, was against giving the money to the town centre strategy group claiming the money would be better spent on Homestart.
