Car crime in Benfleet is on the rise, according to new police figures released today.
The news comes after it was revealed just two weeks ago at least one car a day was stolen in the area.
The latest statistics show how auto crime - thefts of and thefts from vehicles - totalled 381 offences in Benfleet last year.
Police also revealed how things have got even worse this year with 130 offences already recorded inside the first three months - 45 in January, 38 in February and 47 in March.
Leslie Bramhill, Castle Point's crime reduction officer, emphasised how motorists must act to help police cut the crime.
He said: "Car crime is the easiest of all crimes to reduce and I am concerned such crimes in Benfleet are increasing.
"Many initiatives have taken place over the last 20 years to reduce car crime, but they all amount to nothing if the motorist leaves a vehicle a temptation to a thief."
