A man from Burnham has been fined for keeping a mountain of pallet chippings for sale without a licence.

Adam Michael Wood appeared at Witham Magistrates court on March 31 and pleaded guilty to the keeping and treating of controlled waste without a waste management licence.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a notice requesting the removal of the waste within the specified time.

Mr Wood was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay costs of £1,200 after a successful prosecution by the Environment Agency Anglia Region under the Environmental Protection Act.

The court heard how Mr Wood had set up a wood chipping operation in three units at Morelands Industrial Estate in 2002.

An Environment Agency Officer wrote to Mr Wood in August of that year explaining that he would need a waste management licence and that he had to cease chipping and clear the site within 28 days until he received the licence.

Officers returned in September and found what was described as large quantities of chippings still remaining although some of the waste had been removed.

Mr Wood was given an official notice and given a further month to remove all the waste.

A visit in October showed that there was approximately two tonnes of chippings still on the site.

Mr Wood was unavailable for comment.
