Bosses at leisure giant David Lloyd have repeated their determination to set up a centre in Southend.
The announcement comes after the £10million scheme proposed for Snakes Lane, Eastwood, was thrown out by councillors over concerns about highways issues and traffic congestion.
The company hinted it could appeal against Southend Council's decision but was still considering other options including other sites.
