University students are learning how Basildon has led the field in community safety for the past decade.
Middlesex University graduates listened as representatives of the Basildon Community Safety Partnership - made up of nearly 100 organisations working together to tackle crime - explained their role.
University host, Dr Peter Kennison, was keen for his students to balance what they have learned of criminology theory with putting ideas into practice in the real world.
The partnership has recently celebrated success by winning eight High Sheriffs awards.
Its recent high-profile initiatives include the launch of an anti-graffiti education pack for primary schools, spreading the word that "only mugs do drugs" to more than 2,000 children in the 2Smart4Drugs roadshow and the Five Links to Success crime prevention campaign.
