An award and audit scheme is to be introduced by Braintree Council to improve the quality of development in the town.
Recommendations for the scheme were approved by members of the area committee which met on Tuesday night at council chambers.
The scheme is subject to consultation and once this has finished, the process would provisionally start in May, with assessments completed by October or November.
The audit report and nominations for awards will be considered in December and the awards will be presented in January or February.
The cost of the scheme is to be met within the council's existing budget.
Planning officer, Andy Butcher, told members at the meeting the awards and audit will "present a report of the good, the bad and the ugly".
