The man who died in a crash on the A127 was today named as Darren Hornsey.
Mr Hornsey, of Wood Farm Close, Leigh, died on Tuesday night.
The 28-year-old was travelling on the London-bound carriageway in Leigh when his silver Vauxhall Vectra struck a tree, half a mile from the Progress Road junction, not far from the site of a double fatal crash last month.
He is believed to have left the road on the near-side track after losing control at around 9.30pm.
A post mortem is expected to be carried out and an inquest opened into the man's death.
Witnesses should call Rayleigh road policing unit on 01268 775533.
