Essex soldier Matthew Stant has been shot at three times during the Iraq war - by the Americans.

Royal engineer Mr Stant, 26, is currently attached to the Desert Rats near Basra in southern Iraq.

His wife Paula, 26, said he had written back to say he had been attacked three times in incidents of friendly fire but had not been injured.

The couple are both from Harwich but currently live in Yorkshire due to Mr Stant's Army stationing.

Mrs Stant said: "His last letter said he had been shot at three times by the Americans. He's been shot at once or twice by the Iraqis too."

She added he had been mistakenly attacked by American mortars for two nights running while he was in a camp.

Mr Stant has also served in Kosovo and Bosnia.

In 1992, Mr Stant won the Standard's Man of the Year award. Then aged 15 and a paperboy, he looked after a frail pensioner and shopped and cooked for her.

His mum, Rosie, only found out when he asked her to call a doctor for the woman.

He was given his award by television presenter Esther Rantzen.
