Maldon's marine lake could be open in time for the summer holidays.
Councillors discussed ways in which the area, at Promenade Park, could be spruced up and made safer in time for the holidays, which are now about 13 weeks away.
But there are still plans to reduce the depth of the water at the popular bathing site.
Members of Maldon District Council's community services committee were told at a meeting last night that the time had come for them to decide what they want done at the lake, which has been closed since last summer following the death of a visitor.
Officers will now look at the option of opening the lake with high-level security fencing as an interim solution so they can get it up and running for the summer.
They will also be looking at reducing the depth of the lake and trying to reduce the risks in connection with water clarity by reducing the area of water available to allow lifeguards better access and control.
They will also be looking into hiring lifeguards for the site.
