The Sabres suffered a disappointing start to their campaign as they were shut out in a 21-0 defeat at Cambridge Cats.
A combination of injuries and family commitments meant the squad was reduced to just 15 men, but the hosts could still only force two touch downs.
And despite the defeat there were positives to take from the performance as Philip Wines topped the tackle count and new signing Graham Cross produced an all-action debut.
With a larger squad expected to be available for next week's crunch match with the Spartans, Sabres are hopeful of repeating last year's wins over their local rivals.
