Sixty per cent of drivers using a stretch of road in Colchester were speeding, research has discovered.
The section of Ipswich Road was tested for 24 hours to decide whether to put a new speed camera there.
It was found that most people were breaking the 30mph limit on the 0.55km stretch between Betts factory and the Crown roundabout.
Because of the figures, Essex Safety Camera Partnership has decided to put a new speed camera there in the next few months to try to cut road deaths and injuries.
It is one of 22 new yellow-painted speed cameras and six red light cameras which have been announced for the county.
Kelly Fairweather, of the safety camera partnership, said that in three years two people were seriously injured or killed on the section of road.
In the same period, 22 people suffered less serious injuries in crashes, she said.
